‘It’s Hard’: A Poem Written from a Sports Mom to Her Young Athletes

Layne Kressley reached out to us on Facebook to share a poem she’d written years ago for her young athletes. We thought her sentiments were ones many youth sports parents could relate to and wanted to share her poem with you all.

“It’s Hard”
By Layne Kressley

It’s hard.
I will play the game as hard as I can.
I will swing the bat as hard as I can, and if I hit the ball as hard as I can, I will run as hard as I can.
If I catch the ball, I will throw it as hard as I can.
I will try as hard as I can to help my team beat the opposing team.
If we do not win, I played as hard as I can.

It’s hard.
I will block as hard as I can.
I will run as hard as I can.
I will tackle as hard as I can.
If we lose, I played for my team as hard as I can.

It’s hard.
I will dribble as hard as I can.
I will run as hard as I can.
I will pass as hard as I can.
I will shoot as hard as I can.
If we lose I tried as hard as I can.

It’s hard.
I will cheer as hard as I can.
I will lift the fallen spirits as hard as I can.
If we lose, I will try as hard as I can to motivate them next time, as hard as I can.

As your mother, I love you as hard as I can.
When the game is over, I will hug you as hard as I can.
Because it is hard to play as hard as you can. But its easy to love you as hard as I can.
