Is My Player Ready for Competitive Soccer? Part 2
(Jul 11th, 2012)
Last time we looked at several topics I believe should be considered in determining if your player is ready for the jump to club soccer. Things such as whether the lifestyle of club soccer was a good fit for your family, if your player had enough passion for the game, and examining your own motives. You can see the entire article here. My list is by no means definitive, but I have been managing and coaching soccer teams for 10 years now and these are the most common mistakes I see parents making for their children. This time around I will wrap up with a few more hot topics for your consideration:

“Simulation”: Cheating or Gamesmanship?
(Apr 30th, 2012)
Webster defines simulation as “the act or process of pretending; feigning.”
For those not familiar with how the term applies to soccer, it can best be characterized as attempting to fool the referee into calling a foul in your team’s favor. Commonly called flopping or diving, it can occur anywhere on the field, but is usually attempted inside the 18 yard box outside the opponent’s goal because a foul called inside this area is awarded a penalty-kick (essentially a free goal).

Is My Player Ready for Competitive Soccer? Part 1
(Apr 11th, 2012)
This is a question every parent should be asking themselves BEFORE they bring their player to a club (“travel team”) tryout. I have seen time and time again where parents bring their player out to one of our practices and the player is clearly in over their head and not ready for the challenge of playing on our gold-level team. You can help avoid confidence crushing rejection – and rejection will happen at some point, no matter how good your player is – by taking your time and considering the important issues I will be covering over the next two articles.

(Jun 28th, 2011)
Team: Royal City Rollergirls
Sport: Roller Derby
Location: Guelph, OntarioThis week we connected with Cynthia, Founder and President of the Royal City Rollergirls roller derby team. These ladies are the wheel deal! In case you are not familiar with the sport, the game is played with two teams roller skating around an oval track. Points are scored when the designated scoring player (the “jammer”) laps members of the opposing team so both teams are playing offense and defense simultaneously. The Rollergirls are about a lot more than just the sport, they also come together to do community service and have hopes to grow the organization with leagues for men and children. And they’re using TeamSnap to keep everything organized.

Selling TeamSnap to Your Team: Show Them How Organizing Online Makes Their Lives Easier
(May 23rd, 2011)
A basic principle in sales is to put yourself in the customer’s shoes and ask the question, “what’s in it for me.” This definitely applies when introducing your team to TeamSnap. It’s a new method of online team management that engages players and parents, and increase efficiency, but it’s also… new. The first tactic, and probably the most important one, is to explain to the team why you are using TeamSnap and the many ways that it will help them.

TeamSnap Top 5: Best Trick Plays
(Mar 29th, 2011)
Trick plays are certainly sneaky, and may not always be held in the highest regard, but we also have to recognize the creativity and delivery that goes into a successfully executed trick play. For every fruitful trick play, there are probably 100 failures. The Little Giants made “The Annexation of Puerto RIco” famous when they used it to take down the Cowboys in a dramatic underdog win. From the original “Fumblerooski” to the recent Driscoll Middle School acting clinic, we went out to find our five favorites and hope you will enjoy the trickery.

How Can You Help Athletes to Feel More Confident and Perform Better in Sports?
(Mar 22nd, 2011)
Interacting with our customers on a daily basis, I have the pleasure of talking to coaches, team moms and dads, league administrators, managers, and sports parents. Everyone has their own approach to youth sports, but there is an overarching theme of seeking to create a positive sports experience for kids, promoting growth and personal development. According to sports psychology experts, Patrick and Lisa Cohn, confidence is the number one trait that determines whether kids enjoy and succeed at sports. Based on this knowledge, they have created a wonderful program to help parents, coaches, and their young athletes improve kids’ mental game skills for success in sports and life.Read more on How Can You Help Athletes to Feel More Confident and Perform Better in Sports?…

Are Chinese Mothers Superior Or Is Yin-Yang The Answer For Sports Parents?
(Jan 24th, 2011)
You have likely come across the controversial Wall Street Journal article, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” or one of the appalled or unapologetic responses to the “Tiger Mother”. In the article (which is an excerpt from her book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother“) Amy Chua discusses parenting differences between Chinese and Westerners proudly describing her childrens’ high academic standards (A’s in all subjects outside of PE and drama) and philosophy on substandard performance (“to excoriate, punish, and shame the child”). Amy notes that she is using the terms Chinese and Western loosely and goes on to describe her interpretation of the cultural differences with this conclusion:

TeamSnap All-Stars: Lamma Outrigger Canoe of Hong Kong
(Dec 13th, 2010)
Team: Lamma
Sport: Outrigger Canoe
Location: Lamma Island, Hong KongLamma Island is the third-largest island southwest of Hong Kong inhabited by a relatively tiny population of 6,000 people, including many expatriates, teachers, artists, and musicians. Just a twenty-minute ferry ride from the city, it is a traditional fishing community with rich local culture and a neighborhood feel. It is here that you will find the Lamma Outrigger crews paddling year-round, with their peak season falling in the late summer through the autumn. We had the opportunity to speak with Gina, Chairperson of the Lamma OCC, to hear more about their club and here’s what we learned: Lamma Outrigger is a wild and funny bunch. Beyond their passion for old-fashioned training and their flat-out addiction for ocean canoeing, you’re likely to find them paddling in sequined red headbands or breaking out into sporadic nation vs nation wrestling matches (Canadians are currently leading the match results, though the Americans and British are staging a potential coup).

From Teammates to Soulmates – WSJ Article Highlights Romances Blossoming On The Adult Rec Field
(Aug 20th, 2010)
Making friends, having fun, staying in shape, partaking in “friendly” competition – there are many reasons why people choose to play recreational sports post college. Finding love? That’s a new one. But apparently birds of a feather… wear the same uniform, or at least the opposing team’s. According to this Wall Street Journal article, The Dating Game Takes to the Field, intramural sports can be better than a dating service when it comes to finding someone with similar interests. The very act of playing team sports can enhance the potential for attraction, says dating coach Tracey Steinberg. “It is easy to encourage, acknowledge and support your fellow teammates, which can be attractive to others.” Ms. Steinberg also cites the “Romeo and Juliet” mentality that can ensnare members of opposing teams.
